So if you read my blog you will know that last week I was told that I have gestational diabetes. I was given a finger prick testing kit to prick my finger 4 times a day.
My readings this week have been very up and down (mostly up) so I knew the doctors at the hospital would say I was going to need some extra help but I did not expect them to say straight away that I would need insulin! Total shock and scared the life out of me. I flipping hate needles and I really don’t think I could inject myself everyday.
I told them my concerns and she said that because I am only 16 weeks that pills just wouldn’t be enough because I still have quite a way to go but she would speak to the doctor and see what she thinks.
The doctor came in and I told her how scared I was too and she said maybe we could give pills a try for a week but she wasn’t hopeful. Then I suggested they let me try a balanced diet for a week just to see if that would work first (because the past week I have just been testing different foods to see what I could get away with) and thankfully she agreed ( the first lady was not impressed with this decision one bit).
So from now onwards I am going to eat a healthy balanced diet. I’m not going to go on a diet (like I think the first women feared) I’m still going to eat normally but I’m going to cut out sweets, chocolate and crisps, have smaller portions and snack on fruit and veg so I don’t go hungry and crave rubbish.
I have told the kids and OH that they need to help me on it and not sit and eat rubbish in front of me (it helps that none are on my shopping list) you may think I’m being cruel but it’s only for 5 months and they are 14 and 13 (Harry doesn’t really care) so they should understand it’s in my best interest. I just think all 3 of them will just have extra visits to grandmas 🙂
I’m not going to be really naive and think that I’m just going to eat great and that’s all I will need but I just want to try at least. If I have to have insulin then I will. I will always choose what’s best for my children and I think my peace of mind in that I have tried all I can before I resulted in insulin is the best.
Do you have any suggestions on good meals for diabetics? I have researched a bit but the meals either take forever to prepare and cook or there not ‘normal’ meals that we eat.
